19th Jan 2017 – The years 2015 and 2016 are the hottest years on records going back 11,000 years. Be afraid; Be very, very afraid.
Temperature data for 2016 shows it is likely to have edged ahead of 2015 as the world’s warmest year.
Data from Nasa and the UK Met Office shows temperatures were about 0.07 degrees Celsius above the 2015 mark.
Although the Met Office increase was within the margin of error, Nasa says that 2016 was the third year in a row to break the record.
The El Niño weather phenomenon played a role, say scientists, but the main factor was human emissions of CO2.
6th January 2017 – The Washington Post reports:
“An enormous rift in one of Antarctica’s largest ice shelves grew dramatically over the past month, and a chunk nearly the size of Delaware could break away as soon as later this winter, British scientists reported this week.
If this happens, it could accelerate a further breakup of the ice shelf, essentially removing a massive cork of ice that keeps some of Antarctica’s glaciers from flowing into the ocean. The long term result, scientists project, could be to noticeably raise global sea levels by 10 centimeters, or almost four inches.
It’s the latest sign of major ice loss in the fast warming Antarctic Peninsula, which has already seen the breakup of two other shelves in the same region, events that have been widely attributed to climate change.
The crack in the ice shelf, known as Larsen C, has been growing at an accelerating rate. Since the beginning of December, it has grown about 11 miles in length, after extending 13 miles earlier in the year. In total, the rift has grown about 50 miles since 2011 (it’s almost 100 miles long in total), and has widened to well over 1,000 feet. Now, only 12 miles of ice continue to connect the chunk with the rest of the ice shelf.” – Washington Post
I re-print the above NASA data-based report under the provocative headline Antarctic Meltdown to stress the acceleration of North & South polar meltdown. 10 years ago, climate-change scientists were forecasting millimetres (mm) of SLR (sea-level-rise) in the “next century”. This Larsen C ice-shelf break-up now forecasts SLR in centimetres (cm) – ten times greater units, raising sea level in the next few years – say, 50 years – or twice as fast. That’s a multiple factor of 20.
And that multiple is still ultra-conservative – playing into the fantasies of Demented Donald and Crazy Sarah Palin who vow to shut-down the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which in turn finances these polar studies at NASA. Donald & Sarah seem to imagine that if they shoot the messenger, the ice will stop melting; and they can press ahead with enforcing laws for coal-powered cars. Today, NASA is forecasting SLR in metres, 1,000 times greater than 10 years ago. BE VERY AFRAID and move to higher ground.
SLR will follow the break-up of the floating ice-shelves, such as Larsen C, because these huge masses of sea-borne ice act as a brake on the movement of glaciers from land based ice mountains – 3 km high in Greenland and 5 km high in Antarctica. Without the braking effects, the ice-mountains are sliding into the oceans – and sea-level will rise. Whatever Demented Donald thinks or tweets without thinking. Perhaps the US is promoting a lunatic, multiple-casino-bankrupt, blustering, peroxide-blonde as President because the nation cannot face reality. Will Donald win the Nobel Prize for Post-Truth climate-science? The prologue of my book Out of the Depths makes the calculation of SLR when ALL the polar ice melts: seas will rise by 300 feet. 5 billion of us live below 300 feet.
